Alpha-bisabolol: a listed whitening active at 0.5%, yet we found no trial testing it alone
The Korean listed amount is 0.5%, the lowest of the nine whitening actives. But we could find no human trial comparing this ingredient on its own against vehicle. What turns up are studies of multi-ingredient formulas.

Not a measurement — reported irritation grouped into five steps. It varies between people.
Alpha-bisabolol is the main constituent of chamomile essential oil. It is widely used as a soothing ingredient and, in Korea, it is also a listed whitening active.
This site has a few ingredients that are listed actives yet hard to find single-ingredient evidence for. Adenosine was one. This is another.

What is established
The same ingredient at a different strength, in a different formula, is a different product. These are the conditions the studies used.
The listed whitening amount is 0.5% — the lowest of the nine
It is one of the nine whitening actives in Annex 4, item 2 of the Regulation on the Review of Functional Cosmetics, at 0.5%. Next to broussonetia extract at 2%, arbutin at 2–5% and niacinamide at 2–5%, it is the lowest.
A lower concentration does not mean a weaker ingredient. Listed amounts reflect the conditions under which data were submitted for each substance; they are not a scale for comparing ingredients against one another.
We found no single-ingredient trial — what exists are combination formulas
We could not find a human trial comparing alpha-bisabolol alone against vehicle (PubMed, checked 16 September 2026).
What the search returns are studies of formulas containing several actives. A 2015 study on epidermal melasma, for instance, tested a cream containing nicotinamide 4%, arbutin 3%, bisabolol 1% and retinaldehyde 0.05% together.
When something improves in a study like that, there is no way to say which of the four is responsible. Bisabolol might have done nothing, or everything. The design does not separate them.
If evidence turns up, this entry and its level will change.
How to use it
- It barely irritates, so it layers easily with other ingredients.
- If the goal is pigment, sunscreen comes first.
- On an ingredient list, chamomile extract and purified bisabolol appear as different entries.
Cautions
- It comes from chamomile, so take care if you are allergic to plants in the daisy family.
- We found no established data on use during pregnancy.
With a new ingredient, apply a small amount somewhere inconspicuous, such as the inner arm, for two days first. Stop if it reddens or stings.
