Forehead and hairline
The width of the forehead and the line where hair begins.
Start here
- What does it change?
Advancing the scalp to shorten the forehead, or moving follicles from the back to redraw the line.
- Is there anything short of surgery?
It depends on the cause. For a forehead that was always wide, there is nothing short of surgery. If it widened because hair was lost, start at hair loss — the topical and oral drugs are there.
- Can it be undone?
Moved follicles and an advanced scalp cannot be undone. Scalp micropigmentation fades but does not fully erase.
There are no numbers and no citations in this box. What has been established, and how far, is below.
First separate "always wide" from "widened because hair was lost." The answers are completely different.
If hair was lost, go to hair loss first, where the topical and oral drugs sit with evidence grades attached. A hair transplant placed on top of active loss keeps the moved hair while the hair behind it continues to go, which can leave an odd line. That is why stopping the progression comes before the graft.
If the forehead was always wide, hairline lowering advances the scalp to shorten it. The scar follows the hairline, and how much slack the scalp has decides the result.
Sometimes the forehead only looks short because the brow has descended. The operation for that is a brow lift, which also appears under facial sagging.
