Collagen creams: applied collagen does not reach the dermis

The rule of thumb in the skin-penetration literature is 500 daltons. Collagen is hundreds of times larger. That applying it increases collagen in the dermis has not been established in people.

Collagen is the main protein of the dermis, and it does decline with age. All of that is true.

The trouble is the next sentence — that applying what was lost puts it back does not follow automatically.

What is established

The same ingredient at a different strength, in a different formula, is a different product. These are the conditions the studies used.

That applied collagen increases collagen in the dermis is not established

The skin-penetration literature has a long-standing rule of thumb: compounds above about 500 daltons barely cross the stratum corneum. Collagen's molecular weight runs into the hundreds of thousands.

Hydrolysed collagen is smaller, but that the fragments reach the dermis and are reassembled into collagen there is a separate claim, and it is not established either.

A role as a humectant that sits on the surface and holds water is plausible. That is the same kind of job glycerin or hyaluronic acid does, not rebuilding the dermis.

Not finding human trials is not proof of no effect. If evidence appears, this entry will be updated.

How to use it

  • There is nothing wrong with using it as a moisturiser. Just expect a moisturiser.
  • At the same price, a product built around a better-evidenced ingredient is the better buy.

Cautions

  • Oral collagen and topical collagen are separate subjects. This page covers only the topical kind.
  • If an advertisement uses words like 'dermis' or 'regeneration', it is worth asking what the basis for that is.

With a new ingredient, apply a small amount somewhere inconspicuous, such as the inner arm, for two days first. Stop if it reddens or stings.
